Mars Lander on parachute

NASA’s orbiter has sent down an image of the Mars Lander descending on its parachute.

NASA’s Mars Phoenix Lander can be seen parachuting down to Mars, in this image captured by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This is the first time that a spacecraft has imaged the final descent of another spacecraft onto a planetary body.

Tara’s in Ulaan-Baatar

What’s she doing in Mongolia? She’s seeing an outbreak of Hand, Foot, & Mouth Disease first-hand. The kind of HFMD in Asia these days is caused by Enterovirus-71. It’s deadlier than the Coxsackievirsus kind. There is no vaccine yet

Screen capture software, free

As a technical writer, I often have to take screen captures or “screen shots” to illustrate a software application or system. A convenient and perfectly adequate tool for the job is the freeware program ScreenHunter from WisdomSoft. It’s currently up to version 5. If you’re willing to pay, you can have a much more versatile version.

Thanks to STC member Ed Beliczynski of ExtendMedia, Inc., who originally recommended ScreenHunter.

Why do people laugh at creationists?

What’s the joke about “Cdesign proponentsists”? It all started during Kitzmiller v. Dover, with the fuss over an “Intelligent Design” textbook called Of Pandas and People that the Dover, Pennsylvania, school board wanted to use in science classes…

And scientists have been laughing about “Cdesign proponentsists” ever since.
