Love the bigot, hate the bigotry

Here’s a new quotable quote from PZ Myers over on Pharyngula:

Remember this every time someone accuses an atheist of being arrogant — we don’t claim to be speaking for a cosmic tyrant who will torture you for eternity if you don’t obey us.

You really think that is a quotable quote? This is a serious question from a regular blog reader.

This is as bad as from any “cosmic tyrant”. An atheist is a very broad and complex term. And prophets like P. Z. Myers tend to forget that in their arrogance.

Well, yes, I do think it’s quotable. And no, it’s not as bad as, “You’re going to burn in hell” or “Don’t you want to believe just in case you’re going to hell if you’re wrong?” The whole idea of “*I* know who’s going to hell and they’re everyone who doesn’t agree with me” is incredibly arrogant and we’ve been de-sensitized to that arrogance by sheer familiarity. And, of course, Prof. Myers is not a prophet: he’s a person with an opinion that he doesn’t back up from the aptly named “bully pulpit.”

The title is meant to jar by making people realize what they’re saying when they say “Love the sinner, hate the sin” and how difficult it is to actually separate the two emotionally. I hope that it makes them feel what it would be like to have it said to them, complete with negative connotations in the noun.
