Pharyngula definition

Someone asked me today, “What’s a pharyngula?” and for a lucid explanation for the general readers I could do no better than to quote P. Z. Myers: “What the heck is a pharyngula?”

Go here if you want a more technical description.

My search also took me to a Nobel Lecture from 1995 about the relative merits of using zebra fish or fruit flies to study genetics (PDF).

The link for “What the heck is a pharyngula?” is bad; returns “404 Not Found”

Thanks! PZ has moved to http://www.Scienceblogs.com/pharyngula and I was able to find the same information there, so I’ve changed the link.
