Definitions worthy of "The Devil’s Dictionary"

In a moment of inspiration worthy of Ambrose Bierce’s Devil’s Dictionary, blogger The Sixth International offers new definitions of persecution and witnessing.

Bierce wrote: Ocean, n. A body of water occupying about two-thirds of a world made for man – who has no gills.”

Sixth International writes:

  • Persecution: a professor of religious studies characterising ‘intelligent design’ creationism as mythology rather than science and, in an email to a private listserv, saying something mildly rude about fundamentalists.
  • Witnessing for Christ: beating the professor in question to the point of hospitalisation.

That recalls a statement by a young man who had escorted his rape-victim girlfriend to an abortion clinic: Sidewalk counselling means spitting on us and hitting us with the butt ends of their signs.”

Mystery mammal photographed in Borneo

New Scientist magazine writer Shaoni Bhattacharya reports:

A mysterious red furry creature, captured on film in the dense forests of Borneo, could be a new species of carnivore.

The mammal, which is slightly larger than a domestic cat, has dark red fur and a long, bushy tail. It was snapped twice at night by a camera trap….

Its general shape – with a possibly pointed snout, small ears, and large powerful hind legs – suggests it is a meat-eater. It has some similarities with martens or civets and could belong to these groups, or it may belong to an entirely new group.
