Diver wrestles lobster

A British diver says that this large lobster rushed at him. He managed to wrestle it into a string bag and bring it to the surface. It turned out to weigh about ten pounds (4.5 kg). It’s probably at least 50 years old. The lobster is now at Weymouth’s Sea Life Park.

Perpetual motion

Perpetual motion is in the news lately: the Irish company Steorn is promising to demonstrate a perpetual motion machine. (Here’s a history of perpetual motion claims.) The poster demonstrates one of my favourite perpetual motion schemes, the Buttered Toast vs. Falling Cat Levitator. (It’s from LolCat Buildr.) This could also be considered a hover cat.

Knowledge Management takes editors

Barry Campbell at Knowledge Work notes that for knowledge management to work in an organization, experienced people need to read everything and classify it.

For the uninitiated, “knowledge management” is the capture, collection, organization, and storage of information within an organization, together with a mechanism for allowing this information to be shared easily.

See “Perils of KM:”

…for your KM effort to be successful, you need someone Smart (usually several someones, a whole team of human editors) reading Every. Single. Thing. that goes into your KM database, keeping it current and accurate, and making sure that bad or undesirable information is not captured.

Come to the dark side…

Media Convert provides free online file conversion

If you’re trying, and failing, to open a file from one program in another program, try the Web site Media Convert. Karen Weiner Campbell describes converting a document written in Open Office 2.1 running under Windows to run on a Macintosh system running OS 9.2.

I was able to solve the problem once I found Media Convert, which took my OO doc and translated it into a format the Mac could read. The site is notable for several reasons. For one, it’s well designed – straightforward, clear and easy to use. For another, it obviates the need to download new software, which makes using it both safer and quicker. Best of all, the file formats it works with run the gamut from text to movies, images and sound (including ringtones, if that’s your thing).

Hat tip to Knowledge Work.
