Robo-moose!

Wildlife conservation officers in Nova Scotia are using robotic deer and moose designed by a taxidermist. I swear, I read about this in one of my science-fiction magazines last month. And now it’s on Daily Planet! The moose is a realistic model covered with moosehide. It can move its head. And when shot, it collapses!

There are only about 1,000 moose left in the province and hunting them is not allowed. However, the sight of a moose is too tempting for habitual scofflaws. Then the wildlife officers jump out of the woods and arrest the poachers. One fellow has been arrested twice eleven years apart.

Here’s a link to a blog article about the first person convicted of shooting Robo-moose. You can scroll down in this Discovery Canada page to the Robo-moose video.

And the technology is spreading! The current newsletter of the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation notes, “the SWF offered 3 confiscated, top of the line, rifles for auction. The sale of these rifles exceeded expectations realizing $5,700 allowing the SWF to buy 2 Robo Moose and a Robo Mule Deer for our Conservation officers.”
