The first full study must have just finished, because this is in the news again. Like the famous La Brea and other tar pits, a crevice in Australia trapped many animals, creating a picture of life then. These animals come from a time 800,000 to 200,000 years ago, a time that supplies few fossils. The specimens include the first complete skeletons of the marsupial lion, Thylacaleo carnifex, and eight new species of kangaroos.
The three caves in question were found in May, 2002, by aerial survey and initially explored in July of that year. They were found not by scientists but by cavers who were using ultralight planes to look for new caves to explore.
The animals are very well preserved, leading me to wonder if any DNA might be recovered.
